Mazor Robot Assists Surgeons In Israel

Israeli medicine achievements impress doctors and patients worldwide.

One of the latest achievements in the field of spinal surgery was the invention of Israeli specialists from Mazor Robotics Company, it is robot – assistant. It helps obtaining more accurate results in operations on a spine. The invention was awarded a certificate for impressive results obtained from the robot participating in corrective spinal surgery, and reducing the amount of X-ray examination to the fantastic figure – 80%. Israeli medical centers and clinics have implemented a new method of carrying out operations on a spinal column with assisting Mazor robots.

The obvious advantage of using robots for operations on the spine is that the level  accuracy is so high that it cannot be obtained by human surgeons, in this case only high-technology robot can such accurate results of operation. In contrast to operations carried out by surgeons almost blindly, robots are virtually error-free. In addition, the robot has been successfully used for the preliminary examination of a patient, allowing a more detailed plan for the upcoming operation.

The origin of the problem

 

The narrowing results in an increase of pressure on a spinal cord (stenosis), whereby nerves in a spinal are compressed. “Security system” of the body turns on – nerve roots send signals to the central nervous system, and the person begins to feel more and more aggravated twinges.

The classic method solves stenosis problem with the help of spondylosis surgery allowing to connect several vertebrae together directly to eliminate even a slightest sign of movement between them. Israeli scientists have developed another innovation – ReWalk system that allows even patients with paralysis of the lower body move independently and lead a full life.

 

This mechanism is developed by Israeli company Argo Medical Technologies, is specially designed with electronically controlled legs. Supporters “skeletons” with special sensors are worn on feet, they react on changes of the body’s gravity center, giving an opportunity to sit down and get up, move around, even climb on the stair – without any help. Handholds of the ergo-skeleton   are special sticks with armrests.

This innovation has already aroused great interest abroad. Currently specialists are trying to make a system to sell such devices by individual orders, now the system is used effectively in rehabilitation centers. This system is designed for those who operate upper limbs and paralyzed only on the lower, but ReWalk is still modernizing – scientists are trying to adopt it for those who are completely paralyzed.

How does Re-Walk System work?

Special Sensors are implemented into a device, they are sensitive to body forward tilt, whereby a signal is broadcasted to devices serving footrest. When a patient is ready to take a step, he shifts the center of gravity on the support structure, and the mechanism begins to “go”. This principle of operation brings the sensor unit to a normal physiological mechanism of motion, when the motion pulses are transmitted unconsciously. The system includes a special backpack with a battery, which is placed behind the patient – thanks to this battery he or she can move around without a break about three and a half hours.
