Every year the problem of children’s speech delay is becoming more and more urgent. We can divide today’s moms and dads into 2 groups. For the first one speech delay is comparable to a natural disaster, they fall into despair if their child cannot remember a rhyme or pronounce some of the sounds. The second, on the contrary, seek professional help when it is already too late to rehabilitate their kid.

Doctors tend to soothe concerned parents. The fact is that speech delay has not been clearly defined yet, so even if a kid says fewer words than he “has” to at a certain age, you should not worry unduly.

The absence of speech, “baby language” or babbling can be individual characteristics of a child, and later on he will quickly catch up to his peers. In addition, some of boys begin to pronounce words much later than girls. However, in case a parent has noticed that a child of 1.5 years old has really alarming symptoms, it is necessary to visit a specialist. Keep in mind that some symptoms of speech delay may manifest about risks of serious mental retardation of a child. Remember that timely detection of a disease contributes to effective treatment.

It should be noted that child’s development delay can be caused by various infectious diseases, viruses or heredity. Such innocuous stamps of viruses (at first glance) in a latent form, as:

Herpes simplex virus (Herpes virus 1, 2)

Epstein-Barr Virus (Herpes virus 4)

CMV (Cytomegalovirus)

Measles (Rubella)

Toxoplasma

They are carried by an overwhelming majority of people on our planet, and can be transmitted from a mother to a fetus during intrauterine growth of a baby.

In the aggregate of multiple factors, such as virus-carrier, birth trauma, hypoxia, vaccination, compromised immunity of a child as a whole , may cause disorders in the CNS. In particular, these factors can disrupt higher brain functions, which increase the risk of mental retardation, and other neuropsychiatric disorders.

It is worth noting that in accordance with mentioned parameters the “risk group” is prevailing majority of children all over the world, that’s why speech delay and autism syndromes are so common nowadays.

 

In case of speech delay only talking functions of a baby are effected. At the same time, a child is adequately responding to requests in his address and is able to perform a variety of tasks, he or she responds to adults, recognizes the relatives and parents, is in touch with world around him, but the kid practically does not speak at all. Such a child is not diagnosed with motor, and behavioral dysfunctions because in most cases pure speech delay is not accompanied by mental retardation. However, problems with speech may become a hindrance for further development of a baby and his future socialization.

Let’s try to understand what is child’s speech?

 

Up to two years a child is speaking on his “child language”, and that’s a variant of normal development. Children’s vocabulary includes, for example, such phrases as “bee-bee” (machine) or “wof-wof” (a dog). It is necessary to seek professional help only if a child fails to build a new phrase or a sentence out of these sounds.

Here are some evident signs of speech development delay:

  1. At the age of four months child does not respond to presence of a parent

  2. 5 month-old baby does not coo, does not pronounce consonants g, h, k and vowels u, e

  3. At 6 months baby practically does not babble (ma-ma, ta-ta);

  4. By 1 year, child’s vocabulary accounts to fewer than 5-10 words;

  5. At a year and a half a child does not understand the speech addressed to him and does not respond to requests of his parents;

  6. At the age of 2 years a child cannot construct simple sentences.

There are a few ways how to deal with this problem. One of them is a secure author’s technique named cranio-cerebral stimulation (from the Latin: cranium – skull, cerebrum – brain) which is applied in order to treat speech delay in Dr. Levit Rehabilitation Centre.
